Corrections Policy

We correct errors of fact: names, titles, numbers, dates, locations, attributions, and any statement that misrepresents what happened. Errors are corrected whether we find them ourselves or a reader points them out, and regardless of whether the error originated with us or with an issuing organization’s release.

Corrected stories carry a note on the page—“Correction, [date]:”—describing the substance of what changed. We do not silently rewrite published stories. For minor fixes that do not change meaning, such as spelling, typography, or broken links, we edit without a note. Where a story is accurate but unclear, we may add a clarification, labeled as such.

An update adds new information to a developing story; a correction fixes something that was wrong. Updated stories show an updated timestamp under our dateline standards. A correction note is used only when a factual error existed—we do not use “update” language to obscure a mistake.

Releases are provided by their issuing organizations. If an issuer notifies us of an error in its own release, we correct the published version and note the change. If we identify a factual problem in a release after publication, we may correct, annotate, or withdraw it under our Editorial Guidelines. The disclosure line on every release identifies the issuer as the source of its claims.

We decline requests to unpublish accurate content because it has become inconvenient. We remove or amend content when required by law, when it contains a serious error that correction cannot cure, or in rare circumstances where continued publication causes harm that outweighs the record’s value. Removal decisions are made by the editor responsible for this site.
